Non profit Organizations

Our voices matter, and we need to chime in to our elected representatives on a range of environmental matters as they come up for action. And without hearing from a lot of us, the choice will often go to the huge corporate lobbies. I'm a proud supporter of following organizations:

BioGems NRDC's initiative in 2001 to mobilize concerned individuals in defense of exceptional and imperiled ecosystems.

Earthjustice (used to be the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund)

Greenpeace is an independent, campaigning organization which uses non-violent, creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems, and to force the solutions which are essential to a green and peaceful future. Provides research and publications.

MoveOn.org Civic Action was started by Joan Blades and Wes Boyd, two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. Although neither had experience in politics, they shared deep frustration with the partisan warfare in Washington D.C. and the ridiculous waste of this nation's focus at the time of the impeachment mess. On September 18th 1998, they launched an online petition to "Censure President Clinton and Move On to Pressing Issues Facing the Nation." Within days they had hundreds of thousands of individuals signed up, and began looking for ways these voices could be heard. The MoveOn family of organizations brings real Americans back into the political process. With over 3.3 million members across America - from carpenters to stay-at-home moms to business leaders - they work together to realize the progressive promise of this country. MoveOn is a service - a way for busy but concerned citizens to find their political voice in a system dominated by big money and big media.

The mission of the National Audubon Society is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) perhaps the most important environmental organization of all. A non-profit organization with more than 350,000 members nationwide, NRDC's mission is to preserve the environment, protect the public health, and ensure the conservation of wilderness and natural resources. Has up to date reports on environmental politics and news.

The League of Conservation Voters is the national, nonpartisan political arm of the U.S. environmental movement, founded in 1970 to help elect and re-elect pro-environmental candidates to Congress. It monitors environmental laws and rates the voting record of every congressperson.

OCEANA campaigns to protect and restore the world's oceans.

Ocean Conservancy promotes healthy and diverse ocean ecosystems and opposes practices that threaten ocean life and human life. Through research, education, and science-based advocacy, Ocean Conservancy informs, inspires, and empowers people to speak and act on behalf of the oceans.

The Sierra Club is a non-profit member supported, public interest organization that promotes conservation of the natural environment by influencing public policy decisions - legislative, administrative, legal, and electoral.

"Nature's real estate agent." That's The Nature Conservancy. Among environmental organizations, they fill a unique niche: preserving habitats and species by buying the lands and waters they need to survive. Involved with international programs. Has an informative Web site and magazine.

The Union of Concerned Scientists began as a collaboration between students and faculty members at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969 is now an alliance of more than 200,000 citizens and scientists. UCS members are people from all walks of life: parents and businesspeople, biologists and physicists, teachers and students. It is the leading science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world. UCS combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical solutions and to secure responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices.

The Wilderness Society is a non-profit membership organization devoted to preserving wilderness and wildlife, protecting America's prime forests, parks, rivers, deserts and shore lands, and fostering an American land ethic.
